Petronas and Petrovietnam have formalized a strategic alliance to explore joint ventures across the entire energy value chain, from upstream oil and gas to downstream refining and low-carbon solutions. The partnership aims to leverage both companies' expertise to meet evolving energy demands in Vietnam and foster regional cooperation. Petronas highlighted its long-standing presence in Vietnam, which spans over four decades, and noted the deepened collaboration with Petrovietnam has already expanded into renewable energy and LNG projects.
The agreement also includes plans for regional energy integration, such as the tripartite renewable energy initiative involving Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. Malaysia is set to act as a power transit hub and demand center, while Singapore serves as a key demand center. This initiative aligns with the growing momentum toward an integrated ASEAN Power Grid, with the potential to export renewable energy from Vietnam to its neighbors via a new subsea cable.
In addition to renewable projects, the two companies have agreed to evaluate open oil and gas blocks offshore Vietnam. This includes a one-year geological and geophysical study of selected blocks, with Petronas Carigali International Ventures overseeing the process. The collaboration also includes recent milestones, such as Petronas delivering its first LNG cargo to Petrovietnam, underscoring the companies' commitment to supporting Vietnam's energy needs and industrial customers.
The partnership reflects a broader trend of cross-border energy cooperation in Southeast Asia, driven by the need to meet rising energy demands and transition toward cleaner energy sources. As the global LNG market evolves, Petronas remains focused on strengthening its role in supplying energy solutions to Vietnam and beyond, while contributing to regional energy security and sustainability goals.
