Spotify announced it has taken down more than 50 million songs deemed AI-generated or spam from its recommendation system. The company has also updated its algorithm to prioritize music created by human artists. 'Our editors maintain the same standards and do not program content identified as slop or spam,' Spotify stated. 'Since these changes, we've seen a significant drop in listener concerns about such content appearing in recommendations.'
The platform has introduced an 'AI Persona' badge for artists using AI identities that do not represent real individuals. It will not recommend music from these AI personas. Spotify uses a mix of listener engagement, upload patterns, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks.
While Spotify hasn't mandated labeling for all AI tracks, it's following a trend seen on other platforms. YouTube Music labels AI songs, Deezer offers filters to exclude AI content, and Bandcamp has banned AI music entirely. Last year, Spotify removed over 75 million songs labeled as spam. The company is also collaborating with Universal Music Group and Believe to develop tools for AI music remixes.
