Recent tracing efforts have identified approximately 2,746 ZEC, valued at $3.9 million, linked to the Bitget breach, now flowing into Zcash’s Ironwood shielded pool. Shielded transactions obscure sender, recipient, and amount details, making it harder for investigators to track stolen funds. While privacy is a core feature of Zcash, it complicates efforts to trace illicit activity. On-chain investigator Specter highlighted these flows in a warning dated October 17, noting connections to multiple security incidents. The earlier Bitget breach was traced to specific wallets, but once funds enter shielded pools, the public trail disappears. This creates a challenge for forensic teams trying to follow stolen assets through private transactions. The tension between financial privacy and law enforcement efforts remains a key issue in cryptocurrency investigations. Investigators emphasize that while thieves may leave clues before entering privacy systems, tracing the subsequent path becomes significantly more complex. This underscores the need for proactive measures by exchanges and forensic teams to identify and secure stolen assets before they disappear from public view.
