Permian Wastewater Could Help Cool AI Data Centers

Researchers suggest using oil and gas wastewater to reduce AI data center water demand.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is straining global water and energy resources. A new study from the University of Texas at Austin proposes using wastewater from the oil and gas industry as a sustainable water source for cooling these facilities. Large data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water daily, but indirect water usage from energy production is often overlooked. Recent research indicates that including this indirect usage could significantly increase the overall water footprint of data centers. The study explores methods to desalinate wastewater, with reverse osmosis being the most energy-efficient option, though it has limitations with highly saline water. Alternative methods, such as vaporization, are also viable but more energy-intensive. The researchers emphasize that these solutions are not futuristic but practical, aiming to reduce the pressure on freshwater resources. The Permian Basin alone generates over 790 million gallons of wastewater daily, presenting a significant opportunity for reuse. By repurposing this wastewater, data centers can reduce their water demand while addressing a critical issue in the oil and gas sector.

Impact
This approach could help alleviate water scarcity for data centers while managing wastewater from the oil and gas industry.
