Norway's Sub-Basalt Oil Potential Sparks Industry Interest

Norway's Sub-Basalt Oil Potential Sparks Industry Interest

Norway's untapped oil and gas reserves beneath volcanic rock are gaining attention due to new tech and industry focus.

More than three decades after Norway opened parts of the Norwegian Sea to petroleum exploration, significant oil and gas resources remain hidden beneath thick basalt layers. Recent technological advancements and renewed industry interest are rekindling attention on these largely unexplored areas. The Norwegian Offshore Directorate estimates potential petroleum resources could lie beneath basalt formations in the western Vøring and Møre basins. Despite being open for exploration since 1994, these regions have seen limited activity due to the challenges posed by volcanic rock, which hampers seismic imaging. No exploration wells have been drilled to test these formations, leaving their potential largely unknown. Vaka Antonsdottir, Assistant Director for Exploration at the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, noted the growing interest in sub-basalt exploration, highlighting its potential significance. Technological innovations such as ocean-bottom seismic surveys and artificial intelligence are being explored to improve imaging of these complex geological structures. Industry seminars have drawn participation from major operators and geophysical firms, signaling increased technical interest. However, the commercial viability of these opportunities remains uncertain, with insufficient data to estimate recoverable resources. Norway's petroleum industry faces a critical challenge as production from mature fields declines, necessitating new discoveries to maintain output. Sub-basalt exploration could offer a new frontier for resource development, though it may take years to transition from exploration to production. The potential for these resources also has implications for Europe's energy security, as Norway seeks to maintain its position as a key gas supplier. Any commercial development would require extensive exploration, appraisal, and infrastructure investment, but the renewed interest highlights a shift in Norway's exploration strategy.

Impact
The renewed focus on Norway's sub-basalt oil and gas potential could reshape exploration strategies and contribute to long-term energy security, though commercial viability remains uncertain.
