Mahrah Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family through marriage, was discovered slumped against railings in west London on June 13, with a three-year-old child playing nearby. Concerned bystanders intervened to protect the child before calling police, as reported by The Times. Al Nahyan reportedly remained unconscious for about 30 minutes before waking and confronting those who had helped, shouting, 'This is not a slaughterhouse, why do you care so much?'
Prosecutors stated that the toddler had wandered close to moving vehicles and was stopped by a passerby. Police found drug paraphernalia in Al Nahyan's belongings, though no substances were recovered. She pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect, acknowledging her actions as a 'grave mistake.' Her attorney, Stephen Vullo KC, claimed she had not used drugs on the day of the incident but was exhausted from prior use.
Al Nahyan, who receives a monthly allowance of approximately $10,700, has been in rehab at the Priory center in Surrey since July. The judge criticized her for showing 'recklessness and disregard for the child's safety,' warning that the toddler could have been seriously harmed. The court heard that the child had chased a piece of paper toward the road, prompting a public intervention to prevent a potential tragedy.
The case highlights the dangers of substance abuse and neglect, even among those with significant resources. Al Nahyan's lawyer said she plans to complete a three-month rehab program and then become a day patient at a Narcotics Anonymous facility in Guildford. The incident underscores the need for accountability and support for individuals struggling with addiction, particularly when it involves the safety of children.
