Trafigura Secures $1.5B Loan for German Gas Supplies

Trafigura has signed a $1.5 billion loan agreement to supply over 150 TWh of natural gas to Germany's SEFE over five years.

Trafigura, a major commodity trading firm, has entered into a new five-year loan agreement to support its gas supply contract with Germany's state-owned energy importer, SEFE. The deal will see the company deliver more than 150 TWh of natural gas, with the first shipment set for November 1, 2026. Annual deliveries are expected to rise to 30 TWh, up from the current 23 TWh under the expiring contract. The loan agreement is partially backed by a government guarantee through the German ECA Euler Hermes Aktiengesellschaft, aimed at ensuring long-term energy security for Germany.

Germany is working to bolster its gas reserves ahead of the winter, as storage levels remain below average. As of October 28, EU gas storage was at 75%, while Germany's reserves stood at 62%. Despite these levels, Germany's diversified import strategy has prevented a supply shortage, according to VNG, one of the country's largest gas importers. SEFE's chief commercial officer, Frédéric Barnaud, emphasized that the partnership strengthens the company's ability to source gas from multiple origins and ensures reliability for European customers.

The new agreement highlights the strategic importance of long-term energy contracts in a market marked by volatility. With winter approaching, securing stable gas supplies is critical for both Germany and its European neighbors. The government's support through the UFK program underscores the urgency of maintaining energy security amid geopolitical and market uncertainties. Analysts suggest that such deals will play a key role in stabilizing the energy market as demand for natural gas continues to grow.

Impact
The deal reinforces Germany's energy security and supports long-term stability in the European gas market.
