The UK government has revised its tax rules to prevent bereaved families from facing unexpected tax bills due to delays in civil service pension payouts. Previously, lump sum payments had to be made within two years of a death being reported to remain tax-free. This change aims to address concerns raised by families and campaigners who argued that delays beyond their control could result in unfair financial burdens. The Civil Service Pension Scheme, which supports 1.7 million public sector workers, has faced significant administrative challenges, with a backlog of over 120,000 cases as of February. These delays have left many bereaved families struggling with financial strain, highlighting the need for systemic improvements in pension administration.
