OpenAI disclosed that a sophisticated recording device was found in one of its offices, prompting an investigation. The device was discovered plugged into a TV’s USB port in an executive conference room, where sensitive discussions often occur. The company used its AI models to trace the device back to a specific employee, Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national. Alfozan is now charged with attempting to intercept oral communications, according to the Department of Justice.
CCTV footage reportedly shows Alfozan near the executive conference room on multiple dates before the device was found. Prosecutors claim the footage also captured him looking behind the TV, where the device was installed. The device was covered in toilet paper and was installed around September 28th, with its contents encrypted. OpenAI confirmed that the employee was terminated and the matter was referred to the FBI.
The FBI’s investigation is ongoing, and OpenAI has stated it will continue to support their efforts. The company emphasized that it has no evidence of the employee accessing or exfiltrating sensitive data, including model weights or customer information. OpenAI highlighted the role of its AI in identifying the threat, underscoring the importance of its security measures against insider risks and cyber threats. The incident highlights the growing challenges of securing sensitive information in a tech-driven environment.
